A Virtual Court in Comilla began its journey on Monday. On the first day, the court granted bail to a man accused in a case filed over a clash, making him the first accused to secure bail from such a court in the district.
Comilla District and Sessions Judge Md Atab Ullah passed the order after hearing arguments from the defence and prosecution lawyers through video conference.
Defence lawyer Advocate Masud Salauddin confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.
Masud said his client Sarwar was accused in a case filed over the clash that took place in Dashkin Balorampur village of Titash upazila in Comilla on 14 February.
"On March 8, the accused Sarwar pleaded for bail after appearing before the same court in person. However, the court rejected his bail petition."
As the court is closed due to the coronavirus outbreak, on Monday, the judge passed the bail order through video conference after the lawyer from both parties presented their arguments, Masud Salauddin said.
"This is an exceptional experience," he added.
Public prosecutor Jahirul Islam Jahir represented the state.
Earlier, Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain had directed the lower courts to hold hearings on bail petitions of urgent cases through using information and communication technology amid the ongoing closure stemming from the coronavirus outbreak.
