Chittagong University fined Tk9 lakh for razing hills

In addition to that, a furniture shop and a timber trader were fined Tk1.60 lakh each for the same offence

The Department of Environment (DoE) fined Chittagong University (CU)  Tk9.05 lakh for razing hills on campus in Hathazari upazila.

In addition to that, a furniture shop and a timber trader were fined Tk1.60 lakh each for the same offence.

The errant businessmen were identified as Md Bazal, proprietor of Sher-e-Bangla Furniture Mart and Md Hanif, proprietor of Hanif Enterprise.

DoE’s Chittagong Region Director Moazzam Hossain slapped the fines on the offenders following a meeting at his office on Monday.

Speaking to Dhaka Tribune, Nazim Hossain Sheikh, assistant director of DoE (Chittagong Region) said, they estimated the environmental damage to be about Tk12.25 lakh as per Bangladesh Environment Conservation Act-1995.

“The offenders were fined for building roads after razing hills in the university campus without taking permission from the DoE,” added the assistant director.
