11 students of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science & Technology University (BSMRSTU) in Gopalganj fell ill during their hunger strike protesting the merging of the university's Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering (ETE) and Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) departments.
The students were admitted to Gopalganj General Hospital on Tuesday afternoon.

The 11 have been identified as Sakibul Hasan Shanto, Akash Biswas, Nafisa Khanam, Md Shihab Shahriyar, Hannan Miah, Nasim, Md Tanim Miah, Tushar, Bipronath, Azizul Hakim Shobuj, and Abdur Rahim. Two of them have been released from the hospital following medical examinations giving them a clean bill of health.
Acting Vice Chancellor of BSMRSTU and the Chairman of the ETE department, Prof Dr Shahjahan, assigned a probe committee consisting of 16 members to investigate the incident. A meeting of the committee will be convened on January 25.
Registrar of BSMRSTU, Prof Dr Nuruddin Ahmed, confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune and hoped that the meeting on January 25 will resolve the crisis at the university.
Earlier, after 90 days of sit-in protests, students opted for a hunger strike from January 19 as the authorities decided to merge the ETE and EEE departments.
