The director-cum-principal of a private school has been sued for allegedly beating and then confining a student in a classroom for several hours in Amtali upazila of Barguna.
The complainant, Md Mosharef Hossain, father of the victim, a sixth grader of Amtali Ideal School, filed the case on Thursday night with Amtali police station.
In the case, Mosharef said that the school's Principal Md Abu Hanif beat his son badly with a stick on Thursday morning for not attending classes in the two previous days.
Afterwards, Hanif locked Manna inside a classroom, where he was confined until being rescued around 8pm, Mosharef said.
The boy was later admitted to a local hospital. His body bore several bruises, especially on the back, and in hands and thighs.
Hanif has been on the run since the news of this incident surfaced. He could not be reached over cell phone despite repeated attempts.
Locals and some students' guardians said that Hanif, who also teaches at the Gochhkhali Bahumukhi Secondary School, had previously left a tenth grader of that school traumatised after beating him severely during a class. That boy later had to undergo psychological treatment, they claimed.
Amtali police station's Officer-in-Charge Shahid Ullah said that an investigation into the case was launched and they had started to look for the accused.
The High Court on January 13, 2011 declared corporal punishment illegal and unconstitutional in all educational institutions in Bangladesh.
