To avert landslide-related casualties and damages during the upcoming rainy season, the Chittagong District Administration on Wednesday evicted 50 families living in the hills near Foy's Lake in the city.
Ismail Hossain, Assistant Commissioner (Land) of the Sadar Circle and Touhidul Islam, Assistant Commissioner (Land) Kattoli Circle led the eviction drives.
A total of 156 residents of 50 families were evicted because they were vulnerable to landslides. Besides, their utility connections like power, gas and water were severed so that the occupants cannot return to the hills.
The local administration asked these people to move to safer places as part of a disaster mitigation initiative.
According to the Chittagong District Administration, there are 28 hills in the district which are vulnerable to landslides during rainy seasons.
The district administration has so far listed 835 families who are living on the 17 most vulnerable hills.
The hills are owned by different government, autonomous, private organizations and individuals including the Bangladesh Railway, Public Works Department, Chittagong Water Supply Authority, and Chittagong City Corporation.
