Five people, including children, were killed in a landslide in Lama upazila of Bandarban early Thursday after days of heavy rainfall.
The incident occurred at around 4:30am in Missionpara under Azijnagar union.
According to local sources, continuous rain triggered the collapse of a hillside, sending soil crashing onto two houses and burying the occupants. Local residents, public representatives and members of the Lama Fire Service launched rescue operations after being alerted.
Acting chairman of Azijnagar Union Parishad Mobarak Hossain said three members of Md Yunus' family, including a child, and two members of Md Jewel's family were killed in the incident. Their bodies have been recovered.
He added that several other hills in the area remain at risk due to persistent rainfall, and residents have been advised to move to safer locations.
Officials from the upazila administration, fire service and law enforcement agencies visited the site. Authorities are assessing the extent of the damage and investigating the cause of the landslide.
Bandarban Police Superintendent Md Ohabul Islam Khandaker confirmed that five people, including children, were killed and said legal procedures were underway.
Continuous heavy rainfall has heightened the risk of landslides and flooding across Bandarban. The district administration has urged people living in foothill and landslide-prone areas to relocate to safer shelters.
With water levels rising in the Sangu and Matamuhuri rivers, authorities have opened 120 shelter centres across the district's seven upazilas. Several low-lying areas have already been inundated.
According to local weather records, Bandarban received 210mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 6pm on Wednesday.
