Officer-in-Charge of Nokla Police Station, Kazi Shahnewaj has been withdrawn from his post for negligence of duty over the torture of a pregnant housewife in May.

Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Md Aminul Islam of Sherpur Sadar Circle confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune on Saturday.

OC Shahnewaz will be removed from Nokla police station, as soon as the election commission issues the order, as Nokla upazila Parishad election will be held on Tuesday, June 18 , ASP Aminul Islam said.

Earlier, Sub-Inspector Omar Faruk of Nokla Police Station was attached to Sherpur Police Lines on Thursday night over the same incident.

Meanwhile, Doly Khanam has been admitted to upazila health complex as her health condition deteriorated on Friday. Doctors have advised to shift her to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for better treatment.

Senior police officials inspected the crime scene, and a three-member police committee—headed by Additional Superintendent of Sherpur Police (Sadar Circle) Aminul Islam—was formed to investigate the matter, and submit a probe report over the incident.

Police said, Nasima Akter, 40, one of the accused, arrested on Wednesday, has been produced before the court which sent her to custody.

Nasima Akhter, is the elder sister of Lucky Akhter, the main accused in the case.

On June 11, when the video of the abuse leaked, there was a great uproar among the locals, forcing the district police officials to investigate the matter.

On June 12, a case was recorded by Nakla Police Station naming nine people, following the order of the police superintendent.

On May 10, three-month pregnant Doly Khanam was tied up to a eucalyptus tree, and almost beaten to death by the accused over land dispute, in Kaida village of Nokla. Doly had a miscarraige, and underwent treatment in hospital for 14 days.

Victim’s husband, Shafiullah, filed a complaint with the court over the incident on June 3, accusing at least 9 people on charges of illegal confinement, beating, miscarriage, and molestation with the intention to commit murder.
