The Election Commission will later announce a new election schedule

Update : 04 Feb 2026, 03:04 PM

The Election Commission has postponed the election in the Sherpur-3 constituency following the death of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Nuruzzaman Badal.

Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Masud confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune on Wednesday.

He said the election in Sherpur-3 will be cancelled for the time being and formally terminated under Article 17 of the Representation of the People Order (RPO).

“A fresh election schedule for the constituency will be announced later,” he added.

According to Article 17(1) of the Representation of the People Order (RPO), 1972, if a duly nominated candidate dies after the deadline for withdrawal of nomination papers and before polling day, the election process in the concerned constituency must be cancelled immediately.

Under the law, the deceased candidate must have been recognised by the Election Commission as a “valid candidate”.

Following confirmation of the candidate’s death, the returning officer will issue a public notice announcing the cancellation of the election in the constituency.

The Election Commission will later announce a new election schedule.
