The movement by Barisal University (BU) students demanding the removal of Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof SM Imamul Haque continued for the tenth day with an eight-hour token hunger strike on Friday.
Agitated students assembled in front of the administrative section of the university beginning their sit-in hunger strike from 10am Friday.
Student sources said they will continue the strike till 6pm Friday evening for the time being and will resume for indefinite time if their demand was not met.
Barisal City Corporation Mayor Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah called a tri-party meeting in the conference room of Barisal Circuit House on 11am Saturday between the students, syndicate members and district-divisional administration.
BCC mayor told the journalists, the meeting will be held to end the dead lock situation continued since last ten days at BU campus.
"We hope that we will reach in an amicable settlement to resume normal academic activities in BU campus soon by ensuring healthy education and environment friendly situation there," the BCC mayor added.
On March 27, BU students began demonstrations demanding the VC’s withdrawal, following an “offensive comment” he made in a program marking the 49th Independence Day on the campus.
The VC allegedly referred to the students as “razakarer bachcha (the children of Pakistan’s collaborators).”
Students also boycotted classes and examinations after putting the academic building under lock and key the same morning.
On March 29, the VC expressed regret about his comment, which was rejected by the students and they continued their protests.
