Child hospitalized after getting thrashed by madrasa teacher in Lakshmipur

Update : 07 Mar 2018, 05:44 PM
A nine-year-old madrasa student was severely beaten up by a madrasa teacher in Lakshmipur, and was later admitted to the hospital for sustaining extreme injuries. On Wednesday, the child's guardians and the local union parishad Chairman complained about the incident to Md Nuruzzaman, the upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) of Lakshmipur, demanding justice for the teacher's misconduct. Later, the UNO called the madrasa teacher, named Md Faisal, and the child's guardians to his office and asked the teacher to sign a formal apology. However, due to the parents' insistence, the UNO later agreed to take legal action against the madrasa teacher. The incident occurred at Al Moin Islami Academy in North Temuhini of Lakshmipur municipality on Tuesday. The child's guardians went to the UNO after failing to lodge a complaint in the local police station. They complained that Al Moin Islami Academy was responsible for thrashing in excess of fifty students in a similar manner, and even causing the death of one student. Headmaster and Super of Al Moin Islami Academy Bashir Ahmed condemned the act as "inhuman" and said that the madrasa teacher Md Faisal had been expelled from the academy. Legal actions would be taken against him, he said. A High Court ruling on Jan 13, 2011 declared corporal punishment to be unconstitutional and later banned corporal punishment in all educational institutions including primary schools, universities and madrasas.
