He said: “The corporation staffers assigned for mosquito eradication drives are not carrying out their duties properly.”
CCC Chief Conservancy Officer Shafiqul Mannan Siddiqui told the Dhaka Tribune that the mosquito menace intensifies during the dry season as the water flow remains low in water bodies and canals.
He said: “The weather from November to March facilitates mosquito breeding. We are carrying out mosquito control drives in all 41 wards of the city. We are spraying adulticide and larvicide (chemicals used for killing mosquitoes).
“We are also carrying out fogging operations in some parts of the city. Stagnant unclean water is the main reason behind the spurt of the menace.”
According to public health experts, mosquitoes are known for spreading all kinds of vector borne diseases like dengue, malaria, chikungunya, and elephantiasis. If not treated on time, these diseases can turn deadly.The mosquito menace has reached such an alarming level in the port city that all methods to annihilate the tiny terrors continue to fail.
The Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) authorities have published an advertisement in local newspapers seeking cooperation from the city dwellers to address the issue.
In its advertisement, the CCC said without the cooperation from the city dwellers, it will not be possible to keep the mosquito breeding grounds clean and bring the situation under
control. City dwellers have been advised to use mosquito nets on a regular basis.
City residents complained that the menace has gone out of control due to the lack of mosquito eradication drives by the city corporation.
They have resorted to using different mosquito repellent methods like coils, electric mosquito zapping bats, and aerosols, but to no avail.
“It is very difficult to stay home without using mosquito coils or sprays. I have to keep the ceiling fan switched on almost all the time to drive the mosquitoes away,” said Minu Barua, a resident of the Tigerpass area.
Yasmin Farida, a homemaker of the Sholoshahar area, said: “The intensity of mosquito infestation has increased over the last couple of weeks but the city corporation seems to have turned a blind eye to the problem.
“My house is on the sixth floor but I have to keep all the windows shut in the evening and do my household chores with a mosquito swatter by my side.”
