Security tightened at CU ahead of Pranab Mukherjee’s visit

The Chittagong University authorities have undertaken all the necessary measures to bring the campus under tight security for the visit of former Indian president Pranab Mukherjee. University Proctor Ali Asgar Chowdhury said the entire campus has been brought under the surveillance of CCTV. “As part of our security measures, all students have been asked to carry identity cards during their stay on the campus. Anyone found without the card will be detained,” the proctor said adding that no one will be allowed to roam around on the campus after 7pm. Chittagong Additional Superintendent of Police (North) Mosiuddowla Reza said all the security measures were undertaken ahead of the former Indian president’s arrival. Pranab Mukherjee is coming to Bangladesh on Sunday on a three-day visit. He will attend several programmes in Dhaka and Chittagong.

He is scheduled to visit Chittagong Armoury Raid site, the European Club site and Chittagong University (CU) on Tuesday. Chittagong University will honour Pranab with a Doctor of Letters (D Litt) degree on Tuesday afternoon in a special convocation ceremony. CU Registrar Prof Dr Kamrul Huda said the former Indian president is also scheduled to visit two dormitories – Surya Sen and Pritilata –and will deliver a speech for the teachers and students there. “The decision to honour him with D Litt was taken in consultation with President Abdul Hamid,” Dr Huda said. Pranab, according to his program schedule, will visit the ancestral home of Masterda Surya Sen, an influential leader of Indian independence movement against British rule, at village Noapara under Raozan upazila of Chittagong. He will meet President Abdul Hamid on Wednesday evening. Pranab will leave for New Delhi on Thursday.
