
Md Mainul Islam, student of Jalishahat Government Primary School in the district's Betagi upazila, wrote a letter to the prime minister about the condition of his school and handed it to her at the inaugural ceremony of National Primary Education Week 2017 on January 29.
He also received a medal, for winning third place in the national primary school debate competition last year, at the ceremony.
In the letter, Mainul said his school, located near the Barardone River in Betagi, gets flooded by the high tide every day.The daily flooding severely disrupts classes and hampers extracurricular activities.
He requested that the prime minister instruct the authorities concerned to build a two-storey building in the school premises, which would have all amenities to ensure a proper environment for education as well as all facilities of a cyclone shelter.

Mainul's letter, with attached instructions to build a new school building signed by Personal Assistant to the Prime Minister Sajjadul Hasan, was forwarded to the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education on January 29.
Citing the prime minister's personal interest in the school, the instructions urged the ministry to give the project high priority.
In line with the prime minister's instructions, the ministry sent out a letter, signed by Senior Assistant Chief Kazi Moklesur Rahman, to the officials concerned on Wednesday to start the construction of a new building for the Jalishahat Government Primary School as soon as possible.The Dhaka Tribune obtained copies of all three letters.
When contacted, Primary and Mass Education Minister Mostafizur Rahman told the Dhaka Tribune that the ministry would use its emergency fund to construct the new school building.
“We will finish the construction before the monsoon season,” he added.
