The 70th founding anniversary of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the student wing of ruling Awami League, has been marked by sporadic factional clashes in different places across the country including Chittagong, Sylhet and Barisal.
On Chittagong University (CU) campus, two BCL activists were injured as two groups locked horns during a jubilant procession on Thursday morning.
The two factions – one led by Bipul and the other by Mansur Alam – exchanged brickbats between them. At one stage, the police rushed to the spot, charged baton and dispersed the clashing BCL activists.
CU Assistant Proctor Liton Mitra said: “Two factions of BCL clashed with each other during the procession. However, the situation calmed down after police deployment.”
On Sylhet Murari Chand College (MC College) campus, at least four BCL activists were injured in another factional clash during the celebration of the founding anniversary.

The followers of another BCL group, backed up by Metropolitan unit Awami League leader and Sylhet City Corporation Councillor Azad, also organised a procession and enter the campus from outside.
When the two groups went face to face at Tilagarh area, they chased each other wielding local weapons. Rounds of crud bombs were exploded during the alteraction.
At one point, police went to the spot and brought the situation under control after firing 32 rounds of fires in the air, said Shahporan police station Officer-in-Charge Akhter Hossain.
In Barisal, a faction of metropolitan unit of BCL, led by Manna-Zia, attacked the followers of the unit's president Jasim Uddin, during a cake cutting ceremony at Naria School in Alekanda area of the city at late night on Wednesday.
