IGP: Chhatra League men to face action for holding any rally, meeting

The IGP says a new arms policy is being introduced

Update : 26 Oct 2024, 08:20 PM

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Mainul Islam has said that the members of the banned organization Chhatra League will face strict action for organizing any rally or meeting across the country.

He said: “Chhatra League has been banned for its past activities. Its members are not permitted to organize any rally or meeting. If any rally is held, they will face action under the anti-terrorism law as a banned organization.”

He was speaking on Saturday at a gathering of dignitaries held at Rangpur Police Lines School and College Auditorium, celebrating the sixth anniversary of Rangpur Metropolitan Police.

The IGP said that a new arms policy is being introduced.

“In the past 15 years, many who were not eligible received firearms licenses, and these weapons were used against innocent people during mass uprisings. Previous fascist governments used legal arms illegally against the public. Many students and civilians were injured or killed, with some suffering permanent disabilities.”

Regarding the Abu Sayed murder case, the IGP said: “The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) is investigating the case. Twenty-one people, including two police officers, have been arrested. Several incidents in July showed the involvement of misguided officers, and action will be taken against them.”

The IGP said that the police failed to fulfill their duties before the mass uprising due to a few misguided leaders at the top level.

“We now want to build a police force that earns public trust. Continuous transfers are being conducted at the Superintendent of Police and Officer-in-Charge levels, bringing in qualified personnel for these positions,” he added.

July Martyrs’ Memorial Foundation’s General Secretary Sarjis Alam, also spoke at the gathering.

Monowara Begum, mother of Abu Sayed, a student of Rokeya University killed in the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, attended the event as a special guest.
