The total number of people administered with the Covid-19 vaccine in Bangladesh has crossed the two million mark, with 234,564 people vaccinated at centres across the country on Saturday.

The number of people vaccinated in the country stood at 2,082,877, including 1,378,935 men and 703,942 women, on Saturday afternoon, according to a DGHS press release.

The 234,564 people vaccinated on Saturday included 145,280 men and 89,284 women. A total 41 adverse events were reported on the day, taking the total number of adverse events since the vaccination campaign began to 578, the press release added.

Earlier on Friday, Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) Principal Scientific Officer ASM Alamgir announced that over 1% of the population of Bangladesh had been vaccinated.

About 15 countries, including Bangladesh, have been able to vaccinate 1% of their populations, but most of them have much smaller populations, Alamgir said.

The IEDCR official also stressed the need to continue following health guidelines, as complacency due to the vaccination efforts may renew the surge in coronavirus cases.

"For the last month, the infection rate has been below the 5% mark and this is relieving. But it does not necessarily mean that the infection has reduced significantly," Alamgir said. “The vaccine is not the only remedy.”

More than 200 million coronavirus vaccine doses have been administered in at least 107 countries and territories, according to an AFP count based on official sources Saturday.

In total 201,042,149 doses had been given worldwide by 1000 GMT -- a figure that does not include the latest data from China and Russia, who have stopped making their progress public in recent days.

Some 45% of the injections took places in countries belonging to the wealthy G7 club, whose members account for just 10% of the global population.
