Covid-19: Bangladesh records 27 more deaths, 1,632 new cases

So far at least 7,156 people have died of Covid-19 in the country

Bangladesh has logged 37 deaths from coronavirus in the 24 hours until Wednesday morning, taking the overall tally to 7,156.

The total number of coronavirus cases surged to 495,841 as the health authorities recorded 1,632 fresh cases in the 24-hour span.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) revealed the updated figures through a regular press release on Wednesday.

Of the total number of samples tested, 9.59% tested positive, whereas 16.40 % cases were detected from the total tests conducted so far, added the press release.

Deceased

Among the total number of infections, 86.59% patients have recovered, while 1.44% have died since Bangladesh detected its first three Covid-19 positive cases on March 8. 

Of the 27 victims, 23 were male and 4 female, the press release said.

The division-wise data show that 19 deaths occurred in Dhaka division, two in Rangpur and one in Rajshahi.

Among the 7,156 deaths, 3,906 deaths occurred in Dhaka division, 1,330 in Chittagong division, 420 in Rajshahi division, 512 in Khulna division, 231 in Barisal division, 280 in Sylhet division, 322 in Rangpur division and 155 in Mymensingh division.

People over 60 constitute 54% of total fatalities

The death rate of people in their 60s due to Covid-19 has been increasing. Of the 27 people who died in the last 24 hours, 18 were aged above 60.

According to the government, a total of 7,156 people have died in the country so far. Of them, 3,870 were in their 60s, which is 54.08% of the total number of fatalities.

Experts say doctors in the 60s are always at risk of Covid-19, as they are prone to other complex diseases.

According to the DGHS the death rate relates to those aged 51 to 60 years. The total number of deaths at this age is 1,834, which is 25.63%; the death count of people between 41 and 50 years is 844, which is 11.79%, number of people between the ages of 31 and 40 is 363, which is 5.07%; number of deaths in people between the ages of 21 to 30 is 157, which is 2.19%; number of people between 11 and 20 years is 55, which is 0.77% and between the age of zero to 10 years there are 33 deaths, which is 0.46%.

Recovery

The recovery count rose to 429,351 after another 2,622 patients were discharged from hospitals during the period.

A total of 17,025 samples were tested at 140 authorized laboratories across the country during the time.

A total of 3,022,537 samples have so far been tested since the detection of the first Covid-19 cases in the country.

The DGHS said in order to make treatment facilities easily available for the Covid-19 patients, the government had introduced telemedicine services comprising 100 physicians round- the-clock in the country.

A total of 626,713 people have so far received healthcare services from telemedicine.

The DGHS said 23,174,819 people received healthcare services from hotline mobile numbers and health web portals as the government formed a group of medical professionals to provide emergency healthcare services.

Global Situation

On March 8, the health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2.

The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December last year and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.

The fast spreading coronavirus has claimed 1,644,996 lives and infected 73,952,265 people across the world till Wednesday afternoon, according to Worldometer.

As many as 51,965,404 people have recovered from Covid-19, which has spread to 218 countries and territories across the planet.
