Gonoshasthaya Kendra has decided to set up a 15-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at its hospital in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi to treat Covid-19 patients at the initiative of its founder Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury.
“Despite being so ill, he [Zafrullah] is trying to raise money and monitor the overall activities for opening a 15-bed ICU at the Gonoshasthaya Nagar Hospital as soon as possible,” said Forhad Hossain, public relations officer of Gonoshasthaya Kendra on Tuesday night.
He said Zafrullah urged the well-off section of the society to come forward in this regard so that the work on the ICU bed installation can be completed quickly, reports UNB.
Forhad said Gonoshasthaya Kendra has an initial target to open the ICU unit for the coronavirus patients by July 10.
He, however, said although Dr Zafrullah’s health condition has deteriorated again.
“His [Zafrullah] condition has deteriorated again. He’s been suffering from post-Covid-19 secondary pneumonia,” Forhad added.
He said the GK founder has been advised by doctors to avoid speaking completely due to inflammation in his larynx.
Forhad also said Zafrullah has become physically week due to his prolonged illness. “But his morale is very high.”
Dr Zafrullah, also a freedom fighter, underwent coronavirus testing with the kit developed by Gonoshasthaya Kendra which found him to be Covid-19 positive on May 25.
He tested negative for the virus on June 13, but is still suffering from pneumonia.
Since then he has been undergoing treatment at Gonoshasthaya Nagar Hospital in the capital’s Dhanmondi area.
