Which districts have seen the most Covid-19 deaths?

Dhaka, Chittagong and Narayanganj the worst hit

Update : 09 Jun 2020, 11:31 AM

Until June 8, the official Covid-19 death count in Bangladesh was 930, but no official district-wise breakdown of these deaths was available.

“We are not providing the district-wise death data as it creates confusion among people,” DGHS Director (MIS) Dr Md Habibur Rahman, who is also the focal person of the media group, told Dhaka Tribune.

“We are maintaining division-wise data as it is more communicable.”

Mentioning that the DGHS spokesperson had been providing division-wise data daily, the DGHS director said that data on district-wise deaths creates problems as many of the patients are undergoing treatment in a different district than their native district.

“We first sort them by the district in which they were receiving treatment. Problems arise when a patient is included twice, by the district of his treatment and by his native district, and we have to adjust it later. So, we stopped providing district-wise data.”

Nevertheless, Dhaka Tribune has managed to collect the government data on district-wise deaths from coronavirus from a DGHS high official who requested not to be named.

According to Dhaka Tribune analysis of the data provided from the integrated control room, 85.48% deaths were recorded in Dhaka city, Dhaka division, and Chittagong division. The remaining 14.52% deaths were recorded from the rest of the country.

According to the data, 58.92% deaths are in Dhaka city and Dhaka division alone. As of June 8, Chittagong has emerged as the high risk district after Dhaka and Narayanganj.

Division-wise breakdown

A total of 278 people have died in Dhaka city, while 270 people died in the rest of Dhaka division.

The number is 247 in Chittagong, 35 in Sylhet, 24 in Rangpur, 22 in Barishal, 20 in Mymensingh, 18 in Rajshahi and 16 in Khulna.

District-wise breakdown

After Dhaka city, Chittagong district topped the list with 102 deaths while Narayanganj came next with 99 deaths, followed by the rest of Dhaka district with 59, Comilla 47, Munshiganj 32, Noakhali 31, Sylhet and Chandpur 26, Cox’s Bazar 21, Gazipur 18, Kishoreganj 15, Narsingdi 14, and Mymensingh 10.

No deaths have so far been recorded in Bandarban, Rangamati, Khagrachari, Chapainawabganj, Joypurhat, Kurigram, Jhenaidah and Kushtia, as of June 8.

Other districts in the country recorded single-digit death counts during the period, as per the data.
