Covid-19: Nearly 300 Bangladeshis die abroad, mostly in US, UK

Almost 3,000 Bangladeshi in Singapore test positive

At least 297 non-resident Bangladeshis have died from Covid-19 in 13 across the world, according to media report, Bangladeshi communities and diplomatic sources. 

As of Sunday, at least 174 Bangladeshis have died in the United States (US) alone, the highest in any country. At least 24 deaths, mostly from New York, were reported in 72 hours. 

The second highest number of Bangladeshis dying from the deadly virus is recorded from the UK. As many as 79 Bangladeshis have died, most of them reported from London, according to media reports quoting the local Bangladeshi community there.

Tested positive

The US and UK are also the countries hosting several hundred Bangladeshis who have tested positive for the virus, followed by Singapore, where at least 2,962 Bangladeshi nationals have been infected by the virus till Saturday.

On Sunday, Singapore Health Ministry (MOH) reported 596 new cases of Covid-19, of which only 25 of them were local citizens. The ministry is yet to confirm the number of Bangladeshis who got infected recently. The majority of those found infected are foreign workers in the country.

According to the ministry, the city-state now has 2,921 active coronavirus cases of which 2,899 are in stable condition, and 22 are in critical condition. So far 11 people have died from the virus.

Most of the Bangladeshis infected by the virus live in different dormitories built for foreign workers in Singapore where at least 10 workers have to share one single room.

Seeking anonymity, a Bangladeshi worker living in a Dormitory at Punggol in Singapore, told the Dhaka Tribune that since the government imposed travel and movement restrictions on April 7, concerned authorities here have taken care of all the residents by providing food and other support. 

So far, eight Bangladeshis have died in Italy, 15 in Saudi Arabia, six in Canada, five in Spain, four in Qatar and one each in the Sweden, United Arab Emirates, Libya, Kuwait, Kenya and Gambia, according to media reports.   

Some 75 Bangladeshis have been reported to be infected by the virus in Italy, 70 in Spain, 25 in Kuwait, 63 in Malaysia, 10 in Germany, and 20 each in Canada and France.

However, foreign ministry’s Additional Secretary Dr Khalilur Rahman, who head the Covid-19 special cell at the ministry, refused to disclose any figures of Bangladeshis died abroad of the coronavirus infection. 

As of Monday, Bangladesh has reported 101 deaths and 2,948 cases of Covid-19.

The fast-spreading virus has claimed over 166,000 lives globally and infected more than 2,428,274 people, according to Worldometers.

As many as 636,723 people have also recovered from Covid-19 which has spread to 210 countries and territories across the globe.
