Home Adviser Lieutenant General (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has announced that the electronic passport (e-passport) system will be fully implemented by December 31, 2025.
He shared this information with reporters after visiting the Agargaon Passport Office in Dhaka on Monday.
Highlighting the government's efforts to convert all passports into e-passports within this year, the home adviser said: "I intend to complete this work during my tenure."
Addressing improvements in service quality, Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said: "It still takes too long to get a passport. I have instructed for faster processing."
He also clarified the government’s firm stance to prevent Rohingya refugees from obtaining Bangladeshi passports under any circumstances.
When asked whether police verification would be removed from the passport application process, the adviser mentioned that a decision would be made after discussions with all relevant parties.
"We will consider whether removing it will be beneficial or cause problems before making a decision," he said.
Additionally, the home adviser warned that legal action would be taken against foreigners residing in Bangladesh without a visa if they fail to obtain one by January 31.
