The Local Government Division has issued separate notifications removing 493 upazila chairmen across Bangladesh, effective from Sunday.
Additionally, the division also issued a notification removing 323 municipal mayors and 60 district council chairmen elected during the tenure of the Awami League government.
On August 16, a government press release said that in special circumstances, if deemed necessary, the government may remove any mayor or councillor of a city corporation or municipality in the public interest.
Similarly, the government can remove district council chairmen and members, as well as upazila parishad chairmen, vice chairmen and female vice chairmen.
The government also has the authority to appoint administrators in these positions.
The advisory council of the interim government has approved draft amendments to the "Local Government (City Corporation) (Amendment) Ordinance, 2024," "Local Government (Municipality) (Amendment) Ordinance, 2024," "Local Government (Zilla Parishad) (Amendment) Ordinance, 2024" and "Upazila Parishad (Amendment) Ordinance, 2024" to include these provisions.
The notification issued by the Local Government Division on Sunday said 323 municipal mayors elected during the previous government’s tenure have been removed.
The notification also mentioned that under Section 32(a) of the Local Government (Municipality) (Amendment) Ordinance, 2024, all municipal mayors in Bangladesh have been removed from their respective positions.
