The government is working to devise a permanent solution to river erosion for the betterment of the people, says Deputy Minister for Water Resources AKM Enamul Huq Shamim.

"Under the instructions of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the government is working to protect people living throughout the country who are vulnerable to river erosion," he said on Wednesday while inaugurating a project titled “Right and Left Banks of the Kritinasha River” at Naria launch ghat.

The Water Resources Ministry and the Water Development Board have launched a Tk319-crore project for the construction of an 11.94-kilometer-long embankment on both sides of the river. The construction work is set to be completed by June 2024.

"Not only river erosion, but also to protect the people from any kind of disasters, the prime minister has given strict instructions to all the representatives including ministers and lawmakers to stand by the people," he said.

Awami League upazila unit President and district council Chairman Sabedur Rahman Khoka Sikder, Naria Municipality Mayor Advocate Abul Kalam Azad, Naria Upazila Awami League General Secretary Master Hasanuzzaman Khokon, Water Development Board Chief Engineer Abdul Hekim, Superintendent Engineer Syed Shahidul Alam, Naria Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sheikh Rasheduzzaman and Shariatpur Water Development Board Executive Engineer SM Ahsan Habib, among others, attended the event.

Regarding the construction of the Padma Bridge, Shamim said, although the World Bank denied funding the multipurpose bridge, the government is constructing the bridge with its own fund.
