Update : 23 Mar 2020, 07:28 PM

Dr Shah Alam, the highest ranking health officer in Brahmanbaria, has been made an officer on special duty (OSD).

Alam, who was the district's civil surgeon, had disregarded government directives concerning restrictions on public gatherings in light of the coronavirus situation, and went ahead with his daughter’s wedding celebration.

The former civil surgeon was attached to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) with a notification published on Sunday by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The notification orders him to join at his designated post within seven days, and appoints former Assistant Director of DGHS, Dr Md Ekram Ullah, as the new civil surgeon for Brahmnbaria.

Previously on Friday, the wedding ceremony of the former civil surgeon’s daughter took place at the government officers’ dormitory next to Faruki Park in the city.

A number of doctors from across the district attended the wedding. The event was attended by at least 250 people, according to local sources.

However, Civil Surgeon Dr Shah Alam claimed the ceremony was a simple one and did not see much of a gathering.

He told Dhaka Tribune that his daughter’s wedding had been scheduled a month ago and so he could not have stopped the event. “I have many close family relatives but I had only invited a few of them. I wasn’t able to invite many guests and other eminent personalities.”

As a means of preventing the spread of coronavirus, local administrations have started imposing lockdowns and bans on all types of public gatherings.

As a result, multiple weddings were shut down by mobile courts in various places of the country, including in Chandpur, Moulvibazar, Comilla, Bhola, Narayanganj, Shariatpur, and Habiganj.

Mobile courts also slapped hefty fines for organizing such events in violation of public health directives.
