Customs officials seized 12 kg of gold paste, worth an estimated Tk24 crore, from two passengers arriving from Dubai at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Wednesday.
The gold paste, initially confirmed to be 24-carat gold through preliminary testing, was concealed in the jeans and underwear of the two passengers, identified as Chen Liyun and Mo Xiaoyu.
According to Dhaka Customs House, its preventive team launched surveillance at different points of the airport following a tip-off that gold might be smuggled into the country on Emirates flight EK586 from Dubai.
The team intercepted the two passengers after they completed immigration formalities and arrived at baggage carousel-2.
During searches, customs officials found soft, yellow-coloured gold paste concealed inside their clothing and stitched into fabric.
The seized gold paste weighed 12 kg in its wet state, while its estimated market value stands at Tk24 crore, the customs authorities said.
