18kg gold seized from Biman aircraft at Dhaka airport

Airport customs officials said the estimated market value of the seized gold is around Tk38 crore

Authorities have seized around 18kg of gold from a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

A total of 153 gold bars, weighing 17.9kg, were recovered from a toilet panel in the cargo compartment of flight BG-348, which arrived from Dubai on Saturday night.

Airport customs officials said the estimated market value of the seized gold is around Tk38 crore.

Recovery operation

According to customs sources, the aircraft had been kept under surveillance based on intelligence information since its landing.

After the flight arrived, a joint search operation was conducted with assistance from aviation security (AVSEC) personnel.

During the operation, the gold bars were found wrapped in white cloth and concealed inside the toilet panel in the cargo section.

The recovered gold has been handed over to customs authorities, and legal proceedings are underway.
