Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen has said if the US is consistent with its visa policy, they should apply it to BNP leaders because they are trying to sabotage the upcoming election.

He said this to journalists after meeting with a team of US observers at his residence in Sylhet on Friday evening.

The foreign minister said: “BNP's popularity in the country has significantly declined, and they have chosen the path of terrorism. BNP's demands include the removal of the prime minister and avoiding convicting Khaleda Zia.

“Stepping down of the government does not happen in a democratic society, only happens in military rule,” he added.

He said BNP is missing various issues due to their immature leadership.

The Election Commission, being strong, is strictly monitoring Awami League's election campaign, and the same strictness should be applied equally to BNP, the minister added.

Replying to another question, the minister said 227 observers and journalists from different countries of the world will come to monitor the election.

Expressing his dislike for election observation, he said: "We will cast our votes. I am happy however the people vote, and it is fine if they do not vote. Why should we need certification from foreigners? Many countries in the world, like America and India, don't have election observers.

"The members of the American observer team did not make any comments about the election. They are collecting information. They wanted to know how the bitterness between Awami League and BNP can be reduced in the future and why BNP did not participate in the election," the minister added.

The observer team included Geoffrey Macdonald, senior advisor for Asia Pacific Region of IRI, Amitabh Ghosh, senior program manager of IRI, and David Hoogstra, program manager of IRI.
