Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the UK, the US and the EU delegation in Dhaka have issued a joint statement condemning the attack on Ashraful Hossen Alom, popularly known as Hero Alom, during the Dhaka-17 by-election on Monday.
"Violence has no place in the democratic process. We call for a full investigation and accountability for the perpetrators. Everyone involved in the upcoming elections should ensure that they are free, fair and peaceful," reads the statement issued on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the police have made several arrests in connection with the attack, with the home minister promising on Tuesday that those involved would be brought to book.
The Awami League's Mohammad A Arafat, who later emerged victorious in the election, also condemned the attack and demanded an investigation into the incident and punishment for the perpetrators.
