Representatives of the governments of Bangladesh and Libya will sit on Wednesday in Tripoli to discuss the release of two Bangladeshis, including journalist Zahidur Rahman.
Zahidur and two others – expatriate engineer Saiful Islam and their Libyan driver Md Khaled who went missing five days ago – are now in the custody of the Tripoli Security Forces.
State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Dr Md Enamur Rahman confirmed the development to Dhaka Tribune on Tuesday.
He said that a discussion meeting had been scheduled with the vice president of the Libyan Presidential Council, Abdallah Al-Lafi, and the Bangladesh ambassador to Libya.
Meanwhile, the Libyan vice president has assured the envoy verbally that the two Bangladeshis would be released at the earliest.
Zahidur Rahman, 48, a special correspondent for NTV, went to Libya on March 21.
According to his family, the three of them were picked up from Libya’s war-ravaged capital Tripoli.
His wife Taslima said that she last spoke to Zahidur on March 23, and since then, his mobile phone had been found switched off.
She later requested the state minister for foreign affairs to get in touch with the Bangladesh embassy to ascertain the whereabouts of her husband.
Taslima was later informed by the envoy and NTV sources that her husband had been picked up by some people.
Zahidur’s son Farhan Asif Rahman said that, according to the authorities, it might take a few days more to bring him back to the country after his release from detention.
