Prime minister denounces Israeli settlement move

Reiterating Bangladesh's firm stance on the international decision taken earlier of two-state solution to Palestine-Israel conflict, she condemned the Israeli move that defies a UN ban also during official talks with Palestine President Mahmoud Abbas at her office yesterday afternoon. For the first time in about 20 years, Israel has announced it will build new settlements in West Bank and East Jerusalem, on such move. Two weeks into US President Donald Trump’s term, Israeli Premiere Netanyahu announced Wednesday the plan for building 5,500 housing units in the West Bank, while the Municipality of Jerusalem advanced plans for about 550 new homes in East Jerusalem. Earlier, Sheikh Hasina received Abbas with a bouquet as the Palestinian leader reached the PMO yesterday at 3:22 pm, UNB reports. A bilateral meeting was held following a tête-à-tête between Abbas and Hasina. A MoU (memorandum of understanding) was signed to form a foreign minister-level joint committee. Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Mahmood Ali and his Palestinian counterpart Riyad al-Maliki signed the MoU in presence of the Palestinian president and Bangladeshi PM around 4:25pm.

Abbas arrived Dhaka on a three-day state visit on Wednesday evening, when President Abdul Hamid welcomed him at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport amid a 21-gun salute. President Abdul Hamid hosted a state dinner at Bangabhaban in the Palestinian leader’s honour in the evening. Earlier in the morning, Abbas paid his tribute to the martyrs of Liberation War by placing a wreath at the National Mausoleum in Savar. He signed the visitors’ book and planted a sapling there. Abbas also visited the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi 32 at around 3pm and paid respect to the Father of the Nation. Mahmoud Abbas arrived in Dhaka for a three-day state visit on Wednesday evening. President Abdul Hamid welcomed the Palestinian counterpart amid 21-gun salute at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. This is Mahmoud's first official visit to Bangladesh. He had been at the Dhaka airport twice before in stopovers, once in February last year while he was flying to Jordan from Japan. The other time was back in February, 2010, when he had met Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at Dhaka airport while he was on an hour-long stopover en route to his country.
