Shaping climate-resilient futures: ULAB hosts dialogue on green skills in Bangladesh

The event brought together key policymakers, development partners, and researchers to explore the rising importance of green skills in the context of climate change adaptation and workforce development in Bangladesh

The Center for Sustainable Development (CSD) at the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) hosted a policy dialogue titled “Green Skills and Climate Change Adaptation: Through a Southern-Led Lens in Bangladesh” at the Six Seasons Hotel, Dhaka.

The event brought together key policymakers, development partners, and researchers to explore the rising importance of green skills in the context of climate change adaptation and workforce development in Bangladesh.

The session was inaugurated by Professor Imran Rahman, vice chancellor of ULAB, who delivered the welcome remarks.

Dr Samiya Selim, professor and director of CSD at ULAB, moderated the policy roundtable discussion, which was enriched by the participation of several distinguished guests.

Among them were Engr Md Ruhul Amin, chairman of the Bangladesh Technical Education Board (BTEB); Dr Mesbah Uddin Ahmed, chairman of the Bangladesh Accreditation Council; and Mst Rokhsana Begum, joint secretary at the Ministry of Education.

Also contributing to the dialogue were representatives from the World Bank, including Lasley Ahmed; from the International Labour Organization (ILO), Anisuzzaman and Lotte Kejser; and Ikramul H Sohel from the Embassy of Sweden.

Dr KA Rabbani, associate professor in the Department of Environmental Science and Management at Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB), delivered the closing remarks, highlighting the importance of integrating green skills into mainstream education and policy frameworks.

The event also featured the research team from the ERASMUS+ project, ACCESS4ALL – Adapting Climate Change Education, Skills and Sustainability for Advancing Locally Led Solutions, funded by the European Union.

The consortium includes the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB), Brac James P Grant School of Public Health at Brac University (Brac JPGSPH), Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB), University of Maastricht (UM), and the University of Heidelberg (UH).

The team shared key findings and their experiences working on green skills development, helping to frame the broader discussion.

Conversation throughout the session focused on reshaping curricula and vocational training to better match the evolving green job market, identifying critical skills gaps, and proposing strategies for effective policy integration.

ULAB and its partners remain committed to advancing sustainable development in Bangladesh by aligning education and workforce readiness with climate resilience and the principles of a green economy.
