India must choose compassion over expulsion

A humanitarian approach requires due process, protection for minority populations, and cooperation to find durable solutions

London-based rights organization Human Rights Watch (HRW) alleging that India is forcibly expelling ethnic Bangali residents, mostly Muslims from West Bengal, into Bangladesh without due process, while simultaneously expressing concern over India's citizenship verification and voter list revision processes, alleging that exclusion from electoral rolls had resulted in detention, deportation threats, and heightened insecurity among Bengali-speaking communities in parts of India, is deeply concerning.

Above all, however, these actions reflect poorly on India and its leadership. Expulsions without due process not only violate international law but also undermine the moral standing of a nation that has long been championed as a regional leader and a model example of plurality and democratic values.

Indeed, this complete disregard for basic human rights of citizens, simply because they may not agree with the populist ideology, is not fitting for a nation of India’s stature. While acknowledging security concerns is important, they cannot justify actions that strip people of dignity and rights. Allegations of unlawful expulsions only reinforce the perception that India is prioritizing expediency over responsibility.

A humanitarian approach requires due process, protection for minority populations, and cooperation to find durable solutions. India has long prided itself as the largest democracy in the world, yet in recent years, we are compelled to question its actions given how they have continued to treat certain sections of their minority population.

Bangladesh too has a role to play to ensure that borders are safe and secure, yet cannot be expected to absorb the consequences of unilateral actions. Regional solidarity is essential and benefits every nation. To that end, India must recognize that these expulsions do nothing but destabilize the situation further.

The message from HRW is clear: Unlawful expulsions tarnish India’s image and global standing while simultaneously betraying humanitarian principles. We urge leaders in India to act not with force and expulsion but rather with compassion and engagement, for the peace and prosperity of all in the region.
