Today is International Day for Countering Hate Speech, and the United Nations’ observance of this day highlights the growing global concern over the spread of harmful narratives -- particularly in an age where digital platforms allow misinformation and hostility to travel rapidly.
For Bangladesh, a country built on a history of cultural diversity and social coexistence, this is an issue that deserves serious attention.
Bangladesh has witnessed how speech can create tension between communities. Rumours, religiously charged misinformation, and targeted online campaigns have contributed to unrest and, in extreme cases, violence.
While freedom of expression is a fundamental right, it should be understood that it cannot be used as a justification for deliberately inciting hatred or encouraging harm against others.
This is even more relevant now, as social media allows every citizen to act as publishers, with a widely shared false claim causing damage before facts are established.
This makes digital literacy, responsible online behaviour, and stronger awareness among citizens essential parts of addressing hate speech.
However, countering hate speech should not become a tool for suppressing legitimate criticism or silencing disagreement; a healthy democracy depends on open discussion, debate, and the ability to question decisions and institutions.
The focus must, instead, remain on preventing incitement and protecting communities from targeted hostility, while lawful expression is safeguarded.
The government, educational institutions, civil society organizations, and technology platforms all have roles to play here. Schools should promote values of tolerance and respect, while authorities must ensure that actions against hate speech are transparent, fair, and based on clear laws.
Bangladesh’s strength has always been its people’s ability to live together despite differences, and protecting that unity requires rejecting narratives that seek to divide society.
Countering hate speech is not a title to invoke once a year for show; it is a year-round national priority for preserving peace, dignity, and social stability.
