The 24th Convocation of East West University (EWU) was held on Wednesday at Aftabnagar Sports Ground in the capital.

Education Adviser Professor Dr Chowdhury Rafiqul Abrar, as the representative of the president, awarded degrees to 2885 students of undergraduate and graduate programs at the convocation.

Moreover, six students with exceptional talent were honored with gold medals.

In the convocation ceremony, extending his warm welcome to the new graduates, the education adviser explained how advanced technologies are creating new opportunities for us.

Dr Abrar also warned that issues such as intolerance, ultranationalism, and narrow-minded attitudes pose significant challenges to our greater achievements. He urged the younger generation to confront these challenges in order to build a world rooted in justice, peace, and tolerance.

Convocation speaker Syed Nasim Manzur, managing director of Apex Footwear Limited, Bangladesh, asserted that the future of the country over the next 25 to 30 years depends on its educated and skilled youth.

He encouraged the new graduates to pursue entrepreneurship instead of solely seeking jobs.

He advised them to familiarize themselves with the various stages of running a business before starting one, warning that a lack of understanding could lead to financial loss.

Citing China as a role model, he noted that, alongside launching large companies, Bangladesh can also contribute significantly to GDP growth by fostering small businesses.

Special guest Professor Dr SMA Faiz, chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), said that the UGC has shifted its approach to ensure a better educational environment in Bangladesh.

He advised graduates to balance their professional responsibilities with proper care for their families.

Professor Dr Mohammed Farashuddin, chairperson of the Board of Trustees and founding vice chancellor of East West University, called for the establishment of a standard Education Commission in Bangladesh and the adoption of a modern, innovative education policy.

He urged graduates to make the best use of the country’s resources and opportunities, challenging the common belief that Bangladesh must always rely on imports.

Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Shams Rahman emphasized the importance of technological and communication skills, along with creativity, in transforming Bangladesh’s population into a powerhouse.

He encouraged graduates to think beyond conventional boundaries and use their innovative capacities to create something new.

Among others present at the convocation were Dr Khalilur Rahman, national security adviser and the chief adviser’s high representative; vice chancellors from various universities; cultural figures; distinguished members of the Board of Trustees; the pro-vice chancellor; treasurer; registrar; deans; department chairpersons; faculty members; staff; graduates; and their families.

Students expressed joy at receiving their degrees on time and satisfaction with the timely completion of their academic journey.
