Update : 19 Dec 2024, 08:45 PM

Badiul Alam Majumder, head of the Election Reform Commission, has said that there are no hindrances to the Awami League's participation in the upcoming national parliamentary elections and that the commission will recommend a fair, impartial, and participatory election involving all parties

He made these remarks on Thursday in response to journalists' questions after an open discussion on election system reforms with local administration, political parties, and civil society at the Rangpur District Commissioner's office.

Mentioning that the Awami League should be allowed to participate unless legally disqualified, Badiul Alam Majumder said: "We want an inclusive election. There will be no obstacles. I hope all parties will participate in the elections. In the past, under party-led governments, the Election Commission could not function impartially. However, in this election, election officials will remain free from all kinds of influence, making free, fair, and impartial elections possible."

He further said that after discussions with political parties and stakeholders, reform proposals would be submitted to the Chief Adviser by December 31.

"We have received thousands of proposals. We will review them and come to a decision. Everyone should have the opportunity to contest elections unless they are disqualified."

Badiul Alam also said: "It is the Election Commission's responsibility to revise and update the voter list. We will make recommendations on these matters. The Election Commission will definitely be able to act impartially. Once we submit our reform proposals, the government will sit with political parties to discuss them and finalize the election date. This will advance democracy."
