The Election Commission’s inquiry committee on Sunday served a show-cause notice to the Awami League candidate for Chandpur-2 (Matlab North and South), Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya, for violating the electoral code of conduct ahead of the January 7 polls.
Chandpur Joint District and Sessions Judge Syed Mahbubul Islam issued the notice and asked Maya to give an explanation in person or send a representative to his court at 11am on Tuesday.
According to the notice, M Ishfaq Ahsan, an independent candidate for Chandpur-2, filed a complaint against Maya.
According to the notice, on December 14, Assistant Upazila Education Officer Hasanuzzaman Lulu, through an urgent notice, cancelled the casual leave of government primary school teachers and conducted an election meeting with them at Maya Chowdhury's house. This action violated the electoral code of conduct as government primary school teachers are assigned the duties of presiding and polling officers in the 12th national parliamentary election.
A video of this meeting went viral on social media. Following an investigation into this matter, the independent candidate brought accusations against Maya Chowdhury for violating the electoral code of conduct, asking for the cancellation of his nomination.
The notice says Farajikandi Union Awami League President Moktar Gazi urged the government primary school teachers to work directly for the boat symbol in the presence of Awami League candidate Maya Chowdhury.
Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya's assistant Md Mamun said: "We had earlier received a notice and replied to it. We have not received any new show-cause notice yet. If the court issues any show-cause notice, we will respond to it. "
Earlier, the committee issued a notice to Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya seeking an explanation for violating the electoral code of conduct over an attack on the supporters of an independent candidate. Later, he replied to the notice through his lawyer on December 6.
