EC: Election environment satisfactory but turnout low in Dhaka-17 by-polls

The election commissioner also expects that the voter turnout will increase in the last period

Update : 17 Jul 2023, 03:40 PM

Election Commissioner Rashida Sultana has claimed that the election environment of Dhaka-17 constituency is good.

However, she said that voter turnout is low as she believes that the public interest is lower due to the polls being held at the end of the term of the incumbent Parliament.

She said that the real reason for low voter turnout will be known later. The election commissioner also expects that the voter turnout will increase in the last period.

She shared her reaction to the reporters after visiting a centre of Dhaka-17 constituency and monitoring the overall voting on CCTV in the Election Commission building.

The election commissioner said: “I went to Banani Bidyaniketan school and college centre. I found law enforcement agencies performing their duty. Did not see any irregularity in the surveillance footage. The overall environment is very satisfactory.”

She said: "We have also noticed low voter turnout. This may be due to very short period of time (term of Parliament). As it an elite area, many voters may not be interested in casting vote.”

Regarding independent candidate Tarikul Islam boycotting the election, the election commissioner said: “He could have wait and seen the situation until the end.”

Electoral Commissioner Ahsan Habib Khan said that there is no deficiency in commission's work.

Regarding the complaint of not allowing media personnel to enter the centre, the commissioner said: "I have received this complaint. The journalists were not allowed to enter the cantonment centre with mobile phones. We will look into the matter.”
