Civil society platform Shushashoner Jonno Nagorik (SHUJAN) on Thursday criticised the Election Commission (EC) for its inaction in the Narayanganj city polls.
The secretary of the platform, Badiul Alam Majumder, at a virtual press conference said that the wealth statement of a candidate was supposed to be displayed on the EC website even two years ago.
“Now such information is absent on the site,” he complained.
Referring to Narayanganj 4 lawmaker Shamim Osman’s recent press conference in the city, he said that such breach of the electoral code was a punishable offense.
“But the chief election commissioner himself dismissed the possibility of any punitive measure against Shamim Osman,” he said, adding that these inactions put the EC in a questionable position ahead of the January 16 polls.
He said that information related to income and wealth accumulated by candidates is a key indicator in any polls. “But such an important issue is not being discussed anywhere.”
Badiul Alam said that such reactiveness was tantamount to hindering the holding of a fair election.
