Update : 19 Jun 2023, 11:02 PM

A ban has been imposed on motorcycle movement within the Sylhet City Corporation Election (SCC) area starting from Monday midnight.

The ban will remain in effect until midnight on Thursday.

This information was announced on Sunday through a notification signed by Road Transport and Highways Department Assistant Secretary Md Jasim Uddin.

As per the notification, there will also be restrictions on the movement of trucks, pickups, and easy bikes from Tuesday midnight to Wednesday midnight in accordance with Section 32 of the Road Transport Act 2018, for the purpose of conducting the election.

According to the notification, this restriction can be relaxed in the case of contesting candidates or their election agents, domestic and foreign observers (subject to identification card) with permission from the Returning Officer.

Additionally, domestic and foreign journalists engaged in election news gatherings (must have an identification card), election officials, law enforcement officers, and valid election inspectors, are exempt from this prohibition.

These specific emergency service vehicles, such as ambulances, fire services, electric utilities, postal services, and telecommunications are permitted to move freely for their designated activities.

Furthermore, the relevant authorities have the authority to relax these restrictions for national highways, ports, and other urgent needs, including the supply of emergency goods.

The Deputy Commissioner is authorized to impose restrictions on the movement of the aforementioned vehicles according to the specified schedule.

The Ministry of Home Affairs will undertake the necessary actions to effectively enforce this prohibition and, if deemed necessary, install traffic signs to raise public awareness.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, along with relevant local authorities, will take appropriate steps to publicize the prohibition as required.
