July Unity, a platform claiming to stand for the values of the July uprising, has called for the cancellation of party registrations and a complete ban on the 14-party alliance members, including the Jatiya Party, accusing them of being accomplices in the ousted Awami League regime.
Musaddiq Ibne Ali Mohammad, one of the organizers of the platform, read out a written statement at a press conference at Dhaka University’s Madhur Canteen on Tuesday.
“These political forces cannot be exempted from accountability. We demand the immediate cancellation of their registration, a formal ban, and the initiation of trial proceedings against them,” the press statement read.
July Unity also called for a permanent ban on the Awami League as a political party, along with the cancellation of its registration.
The platform demanded a prohibition on all political, social, and cultural affiliate bodies of the party.
“To be clear, the people’s core demand was the complete ban of the Awami League and the cancellation of its registration. A suspension does not reflect the full implementation of that demand,” the statement said.
Citing unfulfilled promises made by the interim government, the platform demanded the official declaration of a "July uprising manifesto" within 30 working days.
“Otherwise, we will move forward with tougher programs alongside students and citizens to realize our demands,” the statement warned.
The platform further demanded an end to what it described as “fascist control” over the media and cultural sectors.
It also urged the inclusion of the July uprising in the national curriculum and called on state and private broadcasters to air documentaries on the uprising daily.
Among other demands were the swift trial of killings and crimes committed over the past 16 years, and the immediate investigation and prosecution of killings during the 2021 anti-Modi protests.
As part of its next phase of action, July Unity announced that it would release a list of alleged conspirators within the Secretariat, complete with evidence, and submit the list to the chief adviser and the public administration secretary.
