Iranian envoy calls on DU VC

Cooperation in science, technology, medicine and pharmacy was discussed

Iranian Ambassador to Bangladesh Prof Dr Jalil Rahimi Jahanabadi met Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr ABM Obaidul Islam on Wednesday, with the two sides discussing ways to strengthen academic and research cooperation between the university and Iranian institutions.

The meeting was held at the vice-chancellor’s office. The ambassador was accompanied by Mehdi Mawlavi Arani, cultural counsellor at the Iranian Embassy in Dhaka, said a press release.

During the meeting, they discussed ongoing joint academic and research initiatives between Dhaka University and Iranian universities, as well as opportunities to expand language and cultural exchange programmes.

They also discussed developing and expanding Persian language programmes at Dhaka University and exploring greater cooperation in science and technology, solar technology, medicine and pharmacy.

The two sides emphasised increasing exchanges of visiting professors, teachers, researchers and students between Dhaka University and Iranian universities.

They also discussed organising cultural programmes at Dhaka University under the joint patronage of the university and the Iranian embassy.

Prof Obaidul Islam said Bangladesh and Iran have maintained strong historical, social, educational and cultural ties for many years.

He expressed hope that relations between the two countries would be further strengthened through academic and cultural activities.

Ambassador Jahanabadi expressed interest in facilitating the appointment of Iranian professors to various departments and institutes of Dhaka University, with support from Iran’s Ministry of Science and Technology, to promote educational and research cooperation.

The vice-chancellor thanked the ambassador for visiting the university and expressing interest in pursuing joint academic and research initiatives.

Earlier, the Iranian ambassador attended a freshers’ reception and farewell programme organised by the Department of Persian Language and Literature at the TSC auditorium as the guest of honour.

Dhaka University Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) Prof Dr Abdus Salam attended the programme as the chief guest.

The event was chaired by Dr Md Mumit Al Rashid, chairman of the Department of Persian Language and Literature. Faculty of Arts Dean Prof Dr Md Abul Kalam Sarkar and Iranian Embassy Cultural Counsellor Mehdi Mawlavi Arani also spoke as special guests.

Prof Dr KM Saiful Islam Khan, convener of the organising committee, delivered the welcome speech, while member secretary Mehedi Hasan gave the vote of thanks.
