Madaripur UNO, OC withdrawn over negligence of duty

The commission suspended the election schedule of a UP on May 16 due to criminal activities

Update : 22 May 2022, 11:18 PM

The Election Commission (EC) has ordered the withdrawal of Madaripur’s Kalkini Upazila Nirabhi Officer (UNO) Zakir Hossain and police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ashfaq Russell for failing to perform their duties during polls properly.

EC Joint Secretary (Public Relations) SM Asaduzzaman also issued a directive to appoint suitable officers for the posts in a circular on Sunday, reports Bangla Tribune.

According to the circular, a group of miscreants obstructed a chairman-aspirant to submit his nomination paper in Purba Enayetnagar Union Parishad (UP) polls on May 16. They also assaulted the returning officer.

Later, the Election Commission suspended the election due to the incident.

The commission also directed the Madaripur deputy commissioner, superintendent of police, and the concerned returning officer to investigate the matter and submit a report.

After reviewing the report, the commission ordered the withdrawal of the election officers for failing to perform their duties as per the provisions of the rules of the UP election.

Another circular, signed by the Deputy Secretary of the Election Commission Atiar Rahman, said that the polling for the postponed election of Purba Enayetnagar UP will be held on June 15.

The commission also asked Mahabub Alam, the chairman candidate in the general election of the UP, to issue a show-cause notice as to why legal action would not be taken against him for obstructing the submission of nomination papers, creating chaos and other criminal activities.
