The Awami League’s mayor hopeful Selina Hayat Ivy has taken initial lead with the ‘Boat’ symbol in the elections to the Narayanganj City Corporation.
Election officials began announcing the results after polling closed largely without incident amid good turnout on Sunday.
Unofficial counts of 178 centres out of 192 polling stations are so far available.
Ivy, who is seeking a third term as the industrial city’s mayor, leads the race with 149,167 votes.
Her closest rival Taimur Alam Khandaker bagged 85,129 votes with the "Elephant" symbol.
In stark contrast to the recent Union Parishad elections across the country, no incident of violence was reported from Narayanganj.
Polls opened at 192 centres across the city at 8 am and closed at 4 pm. It was also the first time that an entire election in the country was conducted through electronic voting machines (EVMs).
