The ruling Awami League on Sunday handed over party tickets, mostly to existing lawmakers, to vie for the constituencies in capital Dhaka and the central district, in the upcoming general elections.
The party on Sunday announced its candidates for 16 seats in Dhaka out of 20 constituencies, with only four new faces. Four of the 20 seats have been left without an Awami League candidate, three of which are currently occupied by MPs from ruling allies.
Salman F Rahman, adviser to Awami League President Sheikh Hasina, was selected for Dhaka-1 constituency, which consists of Dohar and Nawabganj upazilas. Jatiya Party leader Salma Islam is the current MP in that seat.
Awami League put two candidates- Habibur Rahman Mollah and Kazi Monirul Islam – in Dhaka-5 constituency, Habibur being the incumbent lawmaker at the constituency that consists of Demra, Jatrabari, and Shyampur.

For Dhaka-7, the ruling party has nominated Haji Mohammad Selim, although he was barred from the party ticket last time, but won independently. The Dhaka-7 constituency consists of Lalbagh, Chawkbazar, Kotwali, and Bangshal.
Awami League has selected its Dhaka City North Unit General Secretary Sadek Khan, dropping Joint General Secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanak in Dhaka-13, which consists of Mohammadpur, Adabar, and Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.
Veteran actor Akbar Hossain Pathan Farooque has emerged as a new face for Dhaka-17 constituency that encompasses Dhaka Cantonment, and Dhaka North City Corporation wards 15 and 18 through 20.
Farooque has been associated with the Awami League for more than five decades and has also been the leader of Bangabandhu Sanskritik Jote for many years.
The rest of the four seats are expected to be distributed to alliance members.
