Election Commission Secretary Helaluddin Ahmed confirmed the voting in Khulna City Corporation election was completed in a fair and peaceful manner.
However, he on Tuesday added that three of the 289 polling centre were closed down due to allegations of discrepancy in sealing the ballot papers. "At the rest of the 286 polls, votes were cast with enthusiasm and success."
He also said presiding officers from the Election Commission investigated BNP allegations of an unfair election, and found them to be unfounded. The voting process was conducted in a fair manner.
Bangla Tribune reports that similar sentiments were previously expressed by Election Commissioner Shahadat Hossain Chowdhury.
BNP allegations of agents being forced out of polling centres were wrong, Shahadat said. "BNP's claims were vague. We are not even sure whether the people expelled from the poll centres were agents or not. If anyone does not have proper identification papers, that person generally gets expelled."
Meanwhile, replying to a query about whether people can now put their faith in the upcoming 11th national elections, Helaluddin said: "I cannot answer that question now. All I can say is the KCC polls were done in a fair and peaceful manner."
