The teachers of Kotalipara Sheikh Lutfur Rahman Adarsha Govt College began strike from Sunday in protest against assault on the college principal by a group of BCL leaders.
Sources said former student union general secretary of the college Tarikul Islam Sardar along with his cohorts assaulted Principal Prof Sarbananda Bala on Thursday, centring parting with the responsibility to hold programmes on the National Mourning Day on August 15.
The principal said the BCL men came down on him as he did not agree to the dissolved student union leaders.
“We observed the National Mourning Day on August 15, which they wanted to arrange. Since there is no functional student union in the college, I did not give them the responsibility to do so.”
Islamic Studies Assistant Prof Md Zahurul Haq Sardar said BCL leaders were supposed to attend the Sunday's meeting to settle the dispute, but they did not show up.
“That is why we have decided to abstain from academic work till the offenders are brought to book,” said the academician.
English Department Lecturer Mir Manjur-E-Moula echoed the same as Zahurul.
Asked about it, Tarikul denied the allegation against him.
He gave his version that the college teachers did not hold any programme marking the National Mourning Day.
Tarikul went on to say that the college principal has made up the story to lay blame on him as he went to ask him why there had been no programme on August 15.
