BRAC University on Monday (April 27) organised a daylong programme at its Merul Badda campus in the capital to commemorate the enduring contributions of its founder, Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, marking his 90th birth anniversary, according to a press release.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Syed Ferhat Anwar also formally inaugurated the university’s 25th anniversary celebrations by unveiling the Silver Jubilee logo. BRAC University was established on 16 June 2001.

The day’s events were held to honor the enduring legacy and values of Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, which continue to inspire generations to work toward a more just, inclusive, and compassionate society.

Titled “Celebration of Abed Bhai’s Life and Legacy,” the programme began in the morning with a photo exhibition offering insight into how the founder of BRAC advanced social development in Bangladesh and beyond.

Sir Fazle Hasan Abed Open Rated Chess Tournament 2026 drew over 300 participants from across Bangladesh.  Organisers stated that the tournament paid tribute to Sir Abed's lifelong commitment to nurturing human potential.

A friendly six-a-side football match, 'Jiboner Joyogan Football Match', was organised, featuring players from BRAC Secondary School of Purbogangabordi, Faridpur Sadar, and BRAC University.

The initiative reflected Sir Abed's commitment to inclusivity, youth empowerment, and community building.

In the afternoon, students presented music, dance, and artistic performances inspired by Sir Abed's ideals and legacy.
Khairul Basher, director, Office of Communications, BRAC University, moderated the cultural segment.

The programme concluded with Tamara Hasan Abed, chairperson, Board of Trustees; Salahdin Irshad Imam, board member; Vice-chancellor Professor Syed Ferhat Anwar; Treasurer Ariful Islam; and Registrar Dave Dowland presenting awards to football tournament participants.

'We have a yearlong extensive list of celebrations, recognitions, and togetherness, building bonds within our community, the ecosystem, and partners abroad. We will involve everybody,' said Tamara Hasan Abed.

Lady Syeda Sarwat Abed, an adviser at the BRAC Institute of Languages, and Tahsina Rahman, joint director of Student Life, were also present.
