Brac University observed the 56th Independence Day and National Day through a series of commemorative programs, paying tribute to the freedom fighters, including those who laid down their lives in 1971.

Bangladesh’s armed struggle for independence had begun in the early hours of 26 March 1971, following a brutal crackdown on unarmed Bengalis by the Pakistani occupation forces on the night of 25 March 1971.

The Liberation War lasted nine months, culminating in victory on December 16.

A symbolic blackout was observed on the Brac University campus in Dhaka on Wednesday, 25 March 2026, from 10:30pm to 10:31pm in remembrance of the innocent lives lost on that night.

The following morning, Vice-Chancellor Professor Syed Ferhat Anwar led faculty members, students, and staff in hoisting the national flag and singing the national anthem in chorus at 8am.

Among those present were Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Arshad Mahmood Chowdhury, Registrar Dr David Dowland, Brac Business School Dean Professor Mohammad Mujibul Haque, School of General Education Dean Professor Samia Haque, Office of Communications Director Khairul Basher, and Student Life Joint Director Tahsina Rahman.

The program concluded with a visit to the National Martyrs’ Memorial in Savar, where attendees laid a wreath in honour of the martyrs of the Liberation War.
