Three students from the Faculty of Law at Jahangirnagar University (JU), who had been on a hunger strike with three specific demands, ended their protest by drinking coconut water early on Tuesday in front of the university's new administrative building following assurances from the vice chancellor.
The three students are Md Asaduzzaman, Maliha Hasan and Rofa Raunak. Among them, Rofa Raunak fell ill and was admitted to Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar but continued her strike there.
They began their strike on Sunday evening, demanding the re-evaluation of results for the 49th to 51st batches of the Department of Law and Justice, reinstatement of a separate admission unit for the Faculty of Law and allocation of a permanent building for the faculty.
According to eyewitness accounts, after a syndicate meeting late on Monday, VC Prof Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan, Pro-VC (Administration) Prof Sohel Ahmed, Proctor Prof Rashidul Alam and other faculty members spoke with the striking students.
Following the VC's assurance, the students ended their strike by drinking coconut water at around 2am.
VC Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan said the syndicate has decided to re-evaluate their results.
He also mentioned plans to consider allocating the fifth floor of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities building to the Faculty of Law, along with further deliberations on other demands.
