Students claimed that two students of Jagannath University (JnU) were allegedly detained by police on suspicion of being protesters.
The detention occurred at the main gate of the campus around 12:30pm on Thursday.
Reports indicate that due to the complete shutdown of the pre-announced program of the anti-discrimination student movement, there was a significant police presence in front of the campus.
The police had been dispersing people since morning. Later, at around 12:30pm, officers from Kotwali police station detained two students in front of the main gate of JnU.
The detained students are Md Apurba Karmakar and Khandkar Jalal from the computer science department.
Hasan Matbar, in charge of the Kotwali police station outpost, said: “Even though the campus was closed, they were moving suspiciously around the campus. Photos of the protest were found on their mobile phones. Action will be taken after verification.”
Additional Deputy Police Commissioner of Kotwali Zone Md Badrul Hasan said: “I do not know if any such incident has happened. We are looking into it.”
University Proctor Professor Dr Jahangir Hossain said: “I have spoken to the police station. The police will release them on bail. The assistant proctor has been sent to the police station.”
